2007 Chateau Cantemerle

By Chateau Cantemerle

2007 Chateau Cantemerle from Chateau Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux

In the context of Bordeaux’s patchwork quilt of illustrious vintages, the 2007 vintage often slips beneath the radar, overshadowed by its celebrated siblings. Yet it is precisely in such unassuming years that estates like Chateau Cantemerle demonstrate their deft craftsmanship. The 2007 Chateau Cantemerle stands as a testimony to the diligent toil underpinning this vintage's quiet charm.

An Ode to Elegance and Balance

The ripening season of 2007 saw Haut-Médoc graced with ample sunlight tempered by cooler interludes, ensuring a gradual march to maturation that preserved essential acidity. Elegance was the watchword as Chateau Cantemerle's team coaxed out a balanced expression of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot – the stars of this blend.

In the glass, the 2007 Chateau Cantemerle unfurls gracefully, revealing subtle layers unmarred by the excesses of hotter years. Its aromatic profile presents a graceful coalition of blackcurrant and tobacco leaf, interwoven with cedar and a hint of pencil shavings—a nod to classic Left Bank finesse.

Distinguishing Character

On the palate, one might expect brusqueness from such a vintage, but instead, one is greeted by the silky procession of well-integrated tannins. The fruit asserts itself without bombast; rather it resonates with a contemplative depth that belies the vintage's initial underestimation.

Investors might glance towards more flamboyant years for cellar adornment; however, wise connoisseurs recognize the prudent elegance within bottles like the 2007 Chateau Cantemerle. Quietly confident, it yields not only a diversification opportunity but also proffers an experience rich with Bordeaux's coveted nuance.

While never clamouring for centre stage with brash tannins or overripe fruits, this vintage convinces through its mature creed of restraint and complexity. The 2007 Chateau Cantemerle elegantly affirms that subtlety can indeed beguile and reward those patient enough to attend to its understated whisper.

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 2007 Bordeaux tasting. The 2007 Cantemerle has a lifted redcurrant and raspberry coulis nose with hints of toffee coming through with aeration. The palate is raw on the entry with harsh tannins and a very disjointed, sour finish. I like Cantemerle, but this seems to be poleaxed by the growing season. Tasted March 2015.
