Elegance Over Power: Pauillac's 2004 Vintage

The year 2004 in Bordeaux was marked not by the heatwaves of '03 or the opulence of '05 but by a return to classicism and finesse. Against this backdrop, the 2004 Duhart-Milon Rothschild emerged with an air of restrained power and understated elegance. With two decades of ageing, it is now offering investors, traditionalists, and those new to Bordeaux varietals equally a glimpse into the depth of character that Pauillac can offer when deftly handled.

Upon tasting, this vintage reveals a tapestry of dark fruits interwoven with the subtlest hints of cedar and tobacco – evocative of Pauillac’s regal heritage yet preciously unique to the terroirs tilled by Chateau Duhart-Milon Rothschild. Tannins have relaxed into what can only be described as sumptuously firm, bestowing a balance that makes each sip an exercise in savouring refinement.

Cultivating Sophistication: A Wine Investor's Narrative

An astute addition to any fine wine portfolio, the 2004 Duhart-Milon Rothschild exemplifies the type of vintage that becomes increasingly sought after over time. Another sleeper of the vintage for this property that has been doing impressive work over recent vintages, the 2004 (a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot) displays a dark ruby/purple color along with classic aromas of cedar, creme de cassis, earth, spice, and wood. Medium to full-bodied, ripe, long, and impressively endowed, it should be at its peak between 2010-2022.

As often the case with Duhart, this shows much better in bottle than out of barrel. It has superb intensity on the nose with blackberry, a touch of tobacco and roasted herbs, still taut and deserving another five or six years to open up. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, good weight and structure, masculine and rather foursquare on the finish. It is reluctant to show it true character at the moment so wait. Drink 2012-2020+ Tasted November 2008.
