2011 Carruades de Lafite

By Chateau Lafite Rothschild

2011 Carruades de Lafite from Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac, Bordeaux, France

An archetype of its reputable lineage, the 2011 Carruades de Lafite reflects the specific nuance and disposition of an intriguing Bordeaux vintage. While this prodigious year did not capture the unrestrained adulation bestowed upon its towering predecessors of 2009 and 2010, it harbours an acute refinement that commands recognition amongst astute investors and collectors alike.

A Weather-Touched Narrative

The 2011 vintage in Pauillac disclosed its narrative through a patchwork of climatic juxtapositions. An unseasonably warm spring prompted an early bud break, followed by a summer that oscillated between dry spells and cool periods. The eventual harvest, condensed by capricious weather, certified that only diligent attending vintners could harness the eccentricities of such a season. Henceforth, Chateau Lafite Rothschild's phosphorescent touch delivered a wine of notable structure and elegance.

Palate Precision and Investment Poise

The 2011 Carruades de Lafite intimates dark berry fruit, seasoned with pencil lead shavings - a homage to the quintessential Pauillac characteristic. A teasing weave of tobacco leaf and cedar adds to its aromatic lexicon, while on the palate, its texture pronounces itself with disciplined tannins married well with a restrained ample body; these attributes are hallmarks of careful cellaring potential.

Within the broader narrative of wine investment, this particular rendition from Chateau Lafite Rothschild offers a more immediate charm than its senior siblings, thus attractive to those desiring maturity without prolonged decanting. It stands as a tier on its own - poised and distinguished in a landscape of bolder vintages.

Conclusion: A Sage Selection

In summing up the character of the 2011 Carruades de Lafite from Chateau Lafite Rothschild, we find an articulate expression that mirrors the complexity of its year - refined yet underappreciated amidst grander vintages. This understated opulence entwined with its primed accessibility places it firmly as a prudent choice for investors seeking to diversify their collection with poised elegance. The vintage's story told through each sip makes it not merely another acquisition but a conversational piece that is both captivating in palate and historical context.

This is a red with chocolate, hazelnut and berry character. It's full- to medium-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a juicy finish. Very well done for the vintage. Better in 2015.

James Suckling - jamessuckling.com, February 19th 2014

87-89

The 2011 Carruades de Lafite is composed of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Soft berry fruit, underbrush, fresh herb and bay leaf characteristics as well as soft tannins, a velvety texture, and a medium-bodied, slightly superficial, but satisfying style suggest this 2011 should be consumed over the next 10-15 years.

A blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 39% Merlot, 3.5% Cabernet Franc and 2.5% Petit Verdot, the Carruades has quite a voluminous bouquet, much more rounded thanks to that Merlot with blackberry, mulberry and sous-bois. The palate is much rounder and more forward that I was expected with soft, very supple tannins...this will be an approachable Carruades to drink for pleasure rather than intellectual return. Tasted April 2012.
