By Chateau Gazin

2017 Chateau Gazin from Chateau Gazin, Pomerol, Bordeaux

Pomerol, the smallest of all major Bordeaux wine-producing appellations, has once again proven its exceptional capacity for creating profound wines with the 2017 vintage of Chateau Gazin. The vintage was, to say the least, a true test of terroir and tenacity, contrasting starkly with the riper conditions of the two preceding years.

Captivating Complexity Defined

The 2017 Chateau Gazin, an archetype of refinement, greets the connoisseur with a bouquet brimming with dark fruits and an intriguing hint of truffle – a nod to the noble Merlot asserting its dominance within the blend. The estate's meticulous vineyard management throughout a year marked by frosts and a dry summer has culminated in a wine bearing a splendid structure. One finds a meticulous balance between generous fruit and polished tannins, imparting elegance rather than exuberance.

An Emblem of Investment Elegance

Wine investment connoisseurs eyeing 2017 for its potential forage into maturity will find the Chateau Gazin an exemplar choice. As is characteristic of those wines that adorn Gazin's historic legacy, this 2017 release exhibits the potential to evolve gracefully over years, promising enhancement in complexity and value—an enticing prospect for any serious investor's cellar.

Yet, it is not merely in its investment promise that this wine excels. In the glass right now, it delivers on palate sophistication – swirling layered nuances of smokey oak are interlaced with expressive red currant and subtle minglings of spice and earth. Decanted to encourage expression or cellared for delayed gratification, one cannot understate its impressive stature.

In summary, the 2017 Chateau Gazin stands as testimony to Pomerol's resilient spirit in vintages that challenge both vine and vintner. With an intricate interplay of fruit depth and deft winemaking handiwork on display, this offering from Chateau Gazin secures its position as one of considerable interest to both collectors and connoisseurs—promising not only drinking pleasure but also potential fiscal joy.

A dense and flavorful red already with dark-berry, seaweed and wet-earth undertones. Full body and round and chewy tannins. Green olives on the finish. Serious for the vintage.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Gazin has a beautifully fragrant nose of potpourri, chocolate-covered cherries and spiced mulberries with a core of warm plums and cherry cordial plus a waft of wild blueberries. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a firm frame of ripe, rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and earthy.

90-93

The 2017 Gazin is lush, sensual and enveloping, with lovely palate presence and tons of pure class. Bright floral notes perk up the red berry fruit in a seductive, open-knit Pomerol that captures the best the vintage has to offer. In 2017 Gazin is quite giving today, but also has a good bit of freshness and aromatic nuance that should allow it to develop nicely for years to come. Tasted three times.

91-93

The 2017 Gazin has a very classic Pomerol bouquet with black brambly fruit infused with black truffle and subtle raspberry confit notes. Then, as it opens, there are loamy aromas that lend more complexity. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin and a fine bead of acidity. There is a slightly powdery texture, feeling quite saline. White pepper and fennel notes become more conspicuous towards the finish. Just a classic Gazin from proprietor Nicolas de Bailliencourt and his team.

Focused, with cherry and cassis notes driving through, flanked by singed vanilla accents and a light briar edge. Just a touch toothy through the finish, but should fill out well enough.—J.M.

The 2017 Gazin is medium to deep garnet-purple colored and scented of warm red plums and black forest cake with touches of forest floor and crushed rocks. Medium-bodied, soft, rounded and mouth-filling, it gives good expression and depth.
