Legacy and Longevity: The ’82 Triumph

In my years of chronicling fine wines, few vintages command the reverence due to 1982 — a year that has set down its legacy firmly in the annals of vinous history. The profile of this wine is distinct; a nose that touts an opulent array of black fruits embellished with truffle and earth giving way to a palate that offers dense, ripe tannins swaddled in a velvety cloak. With its sumptuous depth and sensuous balance, the 1982 Trotanoy reveals why Pomerol wines are considered imperative anchors within sophisticated fine wine portfolios. It does not merely stand up to the passage of time — it zealously embraces it, maturing gracefully into an investment piece displaying remarkable fortitude and elegance.

For investors seeking both pleasure and provenance, this vintage represents an unmissable opportunity. The storied past, combined with its continued evolution and unflagging demand, bolster not only the 1982 Trotanoy's desirability but also its esteem as one of the most significant wines for long-term investment from Bordeaux's remarkables.

The splendour of this Pomerol blessing unveils itself fully when decanted, a process that allows those who partake in its pleasures a glimpse into its soul - one steeped in traditional craftsmanship and unyielding quality. Insightful collectors know that the value of such a wine goes beyond mere currency; the very essence of 1982 Trotanoy from Chateau Trotanoy is an experience treasured across decades. Tasted at Pebbles/Zachy's 1982 dinner in Hong Kong. The Trotanoy is a masterful wine. It seems a little distant at first with reluctant aromas of black truffle, blackberry and sous-bois, unfurling like a burlesque dancer on a go-slow protest. With time, it exposes a hint of iron filing, the later briary and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly grainy texture. It is beautifully balanced with that ferrous leitmotif more pronounced in the mouth than on the nose. There is a gentle crescendo of flavours that is not as explosive as Lafleur '82, but is perhaps cut from a similar cloth. Tasted November 2012.

Tasted at the Trotanoy dinner at Sketch in London. This bottle of 1982 Trotanoy repeats the performance of the one served at Zachys 1982 dinner in Hong Kong. It has a wonderful Merlot-scented bouquet that is floral and exuberant, though intriguingly it develops more Cabernet Franc/meaty aromas with continued aeration. It becomes rounded and sensual with roasted chestnuts emerging with time. The palate has a sweet entry, as one would expect for this vintage. It is plush, smooth and rounded in the mouth with dark plum and mulberry notes, a saline tincture and that chestnut motif continuing right to the youthful finish. After 30 years, this still has many years ahead. Tasted September 2012.

What a classic Pomerol with brown sugar, chocolate and black olive aromas as well as ripe fruits. It's full-bodied with super velvety tannins and a luscious and delicious finish. Drink now.

The fully mature 1982 is the finest Trotanoy produced after the 1961 and 1970, and before the 1998 and 2008. There is considerable garnet at the edge, but plenty of sweet kirsch, herb, truffle, and earthy notes emerge from the wine's complex, explosive aromatics, as well as beautiful glycerin and sweetness. It has been at its peak of maturity for at least five years, and should be drunk over the next 4-5 years. Release price: ($325.00/case)
