A Vintage in Dialogue with Time

The year 1999 was not one to provoke headlines; indeed, its arrival was quiet, almost understated - yet therein lies its charm. This is a vintage that dares wine enthusiasts to delve beyond the hyped years and discover its understated grace. Culled from a growing season that provided a gentle nurturing of the grapes rather than extremes of drama, the 1999 Chateau Figeac presents itself with an eloquence that mature palates will appreciate.

Exploring Elegance and Structure

Tasting the 1999 Chateau Figeac immediately reveals why this wine has garnered attention among fine wine investors seeking steady and dignified performers. It leads with a nose of poised fruit - think plums and blackcurrants - enlaced with earthy traces owing to the gravelly soils it sprung from. On the palate, the tannins have evolved into a texture both delicate and structured, providing a scaffold for secondary flavours of cigar box, leather, and forest floor to intrigue and captivate.

The temperament of 1999 was one of balance: neither overly warm nor unduly cool, allowing for an unhurried ripening that imbued the grapes with a layered subtlety. As such, this vintage exhibits a quiet power and ultimately is a testament to the sturdy backbone that exemplifies the best of Saint-Emilion's offerings.

For those looking to amplify their portfolios, the ageing potential of the 1999 Chateau Figeac is notable. One could argue that this vintage has reached a peak in its narrative arc but showing no signs of fatigue, it remains an articulate character amongst its peers.

Its versatility as a companion to refined dishes further underscores its value as an investment component, offering both pleasure and prudent potential returns.

In summation, the 1999 Chateau Figeac articulates its place in the lineage of fine Bordeaux wines with self-assured finesse. As it settles into its third decade with poise and purpose, this wine proves once again why adept investors persistently seek out these thought-provoking vintages.

Tasted at the Château Figeac vertical at the property. I have never really got on with the 1999 Figeac and with 16 years now on the clock, it is vindicating my initial tepid reaction to this wine. Served against the 2000 and 2001, it is clear that the nose is disjointed, a bit "scruffy." This of a young urchin without his shirt tucked in. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly hard tannin and without the flesh to counterbalance it. It's a "pass" from me, I'm afraid. Go for the 1998 or the 2001. Tasted June 2015.
