By Chateau La Mondotte

2006 La Mondotte from Chateau La Mondotte, Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux

The 2006 vintage from Saint-Emilion's hallowed clay expanses holds a special place, demonstrating that, even in less heralded years, commitment to excellence pays dividends. Delving into 2006 La Mondotte, the reflecting glory of Right Bank brilliance is immediately perceptible.

A Timeless Expression of Terroir and Technique

In the hands of the skilled vintners at Chateau La Mondotte, the 2006 growing season – which tasked Bordeaux with capricious climatic whims – yielded something quite remarkable. This is a testament to both the resilience of the terroir and the deft craftsmanship employed during such challenging conditions.

Consisting predominantly of Merlot with a touch of Cabernet Franc, one might surmise that the unpredictable weather patterns that year would be a concern; yet, this vintage stands as a robust contender amidst its peers. It brandishes a mature palette that waxes of black cherries and earthy truffle melding inexplicably with silky tannins, harmonising gracefully as time marches on.

On the nose, you are greeted with an elegant bouquet that mingles bramble fruits with an undertone of graphite and subtle oak influences—a testament to its age-worthy structure. Indeed, such aromatic complexity suggests a fascinating evolution still unfolding within the bottle.

Nurturing Investment Potential

Relished by investors for its capacity to enchant and evolve, 2006 La Mondotte is a prudent addition to any discerning portfolio. While it may not boast of the immediate opulence found in more celebrated vintages, its undercurrent of steady maturity positions it as one to watch – and savour – for those patient enough to let its narrative unfurl.

Encapsulating the inimitable character of Chateau La Mondotte's unique approach to winemaking during a year that demanded prowess and poised response to nature's unpredictability, the 2006 vintage offers not just a glass of exceptional wine but a tale of triumph over trial. It represents an opportunity for wine investors who value depth and resilience mirrored in their collections.

Its narrative is ongoing, but as each page turns with time's passage, 2006 La Mondotte reveals another layer; one more reason why this vintage validates attention from investors and enthusiasts alike.

Tasted blind at Farr Vintners' 2006 tasting, the 2006 La Mondotte offers a pleasant bouquet with red cherries, iodine and blueberry fruit, quite warm and generous, a nose that comes out and hugs you. The palate is mature with a slightly smudged entry: dusky black fruit, earthy and with moderate depth. It does not really fan out towards the finish as I was expecting, though there is a pleasant saline edge that beckons you back for the next sip. This is well crafted and elegant, packed full of flavor with good prospects to age over the next decade. Tasted April 2016.
