A Vintage Surrounded by Challenge

The narrative of the 1997 vintage in Bordeaux is one sieged with climatic challenges, yet it is through such trials that the viticultural prowess and adaptability of esteemed producers like Chateau Leoville Poyferre come to light. In a year that did not receive unanimous acclaim, insightful crafting has ushered forth a vintage with unique qualities worthy of attention from those invested in the fine wine dialogue.

Subtle Strength in a Gentle Year

Unveiling the bouquet of the 1997 vintage reveals layers of ripe, red fruit intertwined with delicate hints of spice and tobacco, showing an evolved profile which comes forward sooner than its more robust counterparts from other years. On the palate, there’s an embrace of subtler tannin structures which allows for earlier approachability; a window into maturity without extensive cellar aging.

This particular vintage benefits from a gentle persuasion; it does not overwhelm but rather entices with smoothness—a testament to the careful winemaking that has heralded preservation of fruit and balance within a challenging growing season. It affords investors an opportunity to partake in the nuances of the St-Julien appellation under unique conditions.

To summarise, for those looking to explore or expand their collections with a wine showcasing the dedication to quality amidst adversity, the 1997 Leoville Poyferre from Chateau Leoville Poyferre stands out as a fascinating case study. Medium ruby with purple nuances, this ripe St.-Julien exhibits delicious, sweet cassis fruit mixed with high quality toasty oak. The wine possesses fat, accessible fruit flavors, attractive glycerin, and no hardness. Neither big nor muscular, it is a medium-bodied, elegant, savory, charming, and delicious effort to be enjoyed over the next 6-7 years.

A slightly pale garnet core. The nose is well-defined but lacking a little complexity with blackberry, a touch of sandalwood and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, good acidity and attractive blackberry and tobacco flavours with a linear but well-defined finish. Moderate length. A little conservative on the finish but not bad at all for the vintage. Certainly less green than its last showing. Drink now. Tasted March 2008.
