By Domaine Coche-Dury

1997 Corton Charlemagne from Domaine Coche-Dury, Burgundy, France

As one delves into the illustrious realm of Burgundian whites, the 1997 Corton Charlemagne from Domaine Coche-Dury presents itself as one of the most beguiling protagonists. Its narrative twists with the climate of '97, a year that gave Burgundy growers a labyrinthine season, yet Domaine Coche-Dury interpreted these challenges with masterful aplomb.

Seasonal Symphony: An Oenophile's Dream

The season's vicissitudes - a serene spring hastily chased by a tempestuous summer and an undulating autumn - were deftly countered by the virtuosity of Coche-Dury's vinification. The resulting wine reveals a seductive tapestry interwoven with nuanced maturity and enigmatic vibrancy.

A Confluence of Elements

The peculiarity of the '97 vintage lies in the unorthodox balance it strikes - it whispers with the wisdom of age yet sings with the vigour of youth. A harmonious coalition of caramelised pear, smoky oak and hints of almond butter enchant the olfactory senses before cascading across the palate with an electric charge of citrus zest and crushed stones – hallmarks of the esteemed Corton-Charlemagne terroir.

The wine commands attention now as it reaches an exquisite plateau where secondary characteristics beautifully embellish its once rambunctious core. Such compelling developments make this vintage a formidable candidate for the discerning wine investment portfolio.

An Enduring Legacy Matched to Investment Excellence

In summary, the 1997 Corton Charlemagne from Domaine Coche-Dury stands as a testament to the winemaker's prowess in sculpting an exceptional wine amidst the whims of nature. As each sip unravels layers of complexity, one cannot help but recognise its remarkable potential as an investment wine – truly an exquisite addition to any collector's cache, beckoning connoisseurs with its storied past and radiant future.

The Corton-Charlemagne exhibits super-ripe buttery pears, apples, and traces of tropical fruits in its nose. This is a huge wine, packed with layers of grilled nuts, peaches, almonds, and sweet white fruits that saturate the palate. It is full-bodied, expansive, and immensely opulent, however, it appears to have trouble fully integrating its alcohol and finishes on a warm and slightly austere note. Drink it between 2001 and 2008. Importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel (510) 524-1524.
