2011 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Domaine Comte de Vogue, Burgundy, France

In the constellation of Burgundy's starry appellations, few shine as luminously as Bonnes-Mares, particularly when one considers the esteemed craft of Domaine Comte de Vogue. The 2011 vintage brought challenges to Burgundian vignerons, coaxing out a symphony of subtlety and strength that defines this remarkable year.

Masterful Precision in an Unpredictable Season

The 2011 vintage in Burgundy was marked by climatic whimsy, with an early bud burst followed by fluctuating spring conditions. Such variables demanded a deft hand in both viticulture and vinification. Domaine Comte de Vogue rose to the occasion, harnessing the peculiarities of 2011 to create a Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru that marries vigour with elegance.

The wine casts a captivating ruby hue, suggesting the depth contained within. On approach, it greets the nose with a garland of aroma: dark cherries and ripe strawberries jostle with subtle earthy undertones and a whisper of oak-inspired spice. The palate unfolds like a carefully arranged tapestry—finesse and structure interwoven, revealing layers of red fruit interlaced with minerality that is quintessentially Bonnes-Mares.

A Vintage Suited for the Savvy Investor

Patience has rewarded the 2011 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Domaine Comte de Vogue with rounded tannins and an acidity that still twinkles with vibrancy, suggesting it remains very much in its window of optimal drinkability. For fine wine investors, this vintage presents more than just an exquisite drinking experience; it is an articulate expression of a complex year—an embodiment of rarity fused with the prestige of its maker.

The equilibrium evident in this 2011 offering makes it one not only for collectors appraising additions to their cellar but also for oenophiles seeking to delve into a somewhat over-looked year that has quietly ascended to present-day allure. Accompanying these traits is the inherent value proposition—a parcel of this Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru assures a spot in any diversified portfolio seeking Burgundian gems from a vintage that sings a unique verse in the anthology of exceptional wines.

To encapsulate, the 2011 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru from Domaine Comte de Vogue stands as a testament to resilience and adroitness—a beacon for those who pursue the profound harmony found within the ephemeral nature of winemaking and investing alike.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Limpid in color, de Vogüé’s Bonnes Mares 2011 has quite a precocious bouquet with black cherries, cassis and crushed violets that demonstrates impressive clarity. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet ripe black cherries and cassis fruit underlying minerality. It feels backward compared to two other Bonnes-Mares ‘11s tasted alongside, although there is impressive persistence on the precise finish. This is a classy Bonnes-Mares, albeit one that I feel is surpassed by the succeeding vintage.
