By Domaine des Comtes Lafon

2011 Bâtard-Montrachet from Domaine Leflaive, Burgundy, France

As one delves into the intricate world of Burgundian white wines, the 2011 Bâtard-Montrachet from Domaine Leflaive presents itself as a compelling chapter in the annals of fine wine investment. In my endeavours to chronicle the majestic expressions that emanate from this hallowed terroir, the 2011 vintage intrigues with its unique narrative.

Historical Harmony: A Year of Meteorological Mischief

The growing season of 2011 in Burgundy was a tapestry of climactic caprice, marked by an early bud burst followed by a somewhat tumultuous summer that tempered the vines' vigour while building complexity. The resulting wines from Domaine Leflaive exhibit a beguiling duality of ripeness and tension, making the exploration of this particular Bâtard-Montrachet an edifying encounter.

Elegant Anomalies: The Essence of 2011

This 2011 Bâtard-Montrachet issues forth a siren call to those well-versed in the subtleties of aged whites. It resonates with an aromatic profile that marries ripe stone fruit with a beguiling nuttiness—suggesting toasted almonds and a whiff of marzipan. Compellingly, it's laced with a citric vivacity that speaks to the vintage’s cool August nights. On the palate, one finds the unmistakeable Leflaive signature: a textural richness that encases precise acidity—one could argue it’s akin to liquid gold being tempered by a silversmith’s deft touch.

Considered in the context of fine wine investment, this offering demonstrates how even lighter vintages can evolve with noble grace. The confluence of early warmth and subsequent moderation has furnished this wine with excellent ageing potential yet allows for earlier approachability—a truly valuable characteristic among discerning collectors and investors valuing both immediacy and longevity.

A Vintage to Remember; A Wine to Endeavour

In summary, the 2011 Bâtard-Montrachet from Domaine Leflaive is an articulate testament from an unorthodox year. Its balance and structure are revelatory, offering not just a tasting experience but also an intellectual delight. This Bottling stands as a beacon for those seeking a distinctive addition to their portfolio—a testament to Burgundy's resilience and Domaine Leflaive's unwavering commitment to excellence regardless of the caprices of climate.

The 2013 Meursault 1er Cru Goutte d’Or has a very precise, mineral-driven bouquet with wet limestone and lime-flower scents that are almost Puligny in style. The palate is well balanced with expressive citrus fruit intermingling with peach and nectarine. It is an undeniably pretty Meursault in the making, one that I suspect will be very seductive.
