In the lush vignoble of Burgundy lies a treasure most oenophiles speak of with a reverent whisper: the 2007 La Romanée from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. This exquisite parcel of land, barely larger than a single hectare, produces a potion so scintillating that each bottle is a paean to the vintner’s art.

A Quintessential Expression of Terroir and Time

The 2007 vintage from Burgundy endures as a testament to the rigours of nature and the acumen of viticulture. Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair has exemplified masterful stewardship over this diminutive vineyard, ensuring that each grape bears the fullest expression of its esteemed terroir. The season itself was ridden with challenges: an uneven spring and a cool, damp August set forth conditions that demanded vigilance and precision from the most dedicated winemakers.

In the crucible of such adversity, the 2007 La Romanée blossomed into a singular vinous jewel. Its bouquet is an intricate ballet—a synthesis of ripe cherries and summer berries interlaced with subtle hints of truffle and fine-spun silk tannins. On the palate, it delivers with precision; a complex anthology of flavours where each note aligns with poised elegance, leaving behind a finish that resonates like the lingering resonance of a grand piano in an oak-panelled chamber.

An Investment in Grace and Longevity

For investors with a discerning eye for exemplary offerings, the investment-calibre 2007 La Romanée crystallises as a beacon within any curated wine portfolio. It stands as one of those rare expressions that not only reflect an extraordinary vintage but also signify the potential for graceful ageing—a vintage bound to accrue value as it spirals majestically towards vinous zenith.

Embarking on a journey through time with a glass of 2007 La Romanée from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair at hand is to participate in the unfolding narrative of Burgundy’s winemaking lore. Tasted at the La Romanée vertical at Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair. The 2007 La Romanée Grand Cru is in keeping with the vintage, very open for business with plush strawberries, red cherries and rose petals. It is not the most complex aromatics that Louis-Michel has overseen but it is utterly charming. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine tannin, very pure red cherry and cranberry fruit, a dash of orange sorbet and plenty of mineral notes on the tensile finish. I would actually broach this now to revel in its youth and joie-de-vivre but it clearly has the substance to last two decades. I'll leave it to you. Tasted June 2015.
