By Domaine Dujac

2008 Clos St Denis from Domaine Dujac, Burgundy, France

The seasoned connoisseurs approach each vintage of Burgundy with bated breath, such is the region's repute for crafting wines that intricately reflect their vigneron's mastery amidst the challenging mantle of mercurial Mother Nature. The 2008 Clos St Denis from Domaine Dujac is one such testament to the brilliance that can arise in cool and demanding vintages.

An Expressive Tapestry of Burgundy's 2008 Harvest

Climatic caprices are the hallmark of Burgundy's terroirs; they cast prominent inflections on every vintage. In 2008, a nippy spring was succeeded by a summer that sang a pendulum-like lullaby, alternating between warmth and rain. True artists of the vine, Domaine Dujac preserved the integrity and identity of their grapes through meticulous viniculture, ensuring that the Clos St Denis' splendour was not marred by autumnal easiness.

The character of the 2008 Clos St Denis thus emerged as a study in balance and restraint. Presenting an aromatic soiree where cherries and earthy undertones jostle with whispers of spice – a bow to its ageing in a conscientious amount of new oak. The palate burgeons with an ersture of supple tannins draped over a linear, mineral core—a Clos St Denis vintage with nerves of steel, yet a heart pulsating with delicate Pinot fruit.

The Intricacies of Domaine Dujac's Winemaking Prowess

Given its reputable consistency, Domaine Dujac demands episodic reflection — investing in their craftsmanship secures not just a wine but a slice à la vie bourguignonne. Their biodynamic methods breathe verve into every bottle, and it is no different with their 2008 offering. In such a noble cuvée as this one finds an unwavering elegance and complexity that tips the hat robustly towards longevity.

In sum, the 2008 Clos St Denis lays before us a rich narrative spun from Burgundy's venerable loam—a tale to enchant investors and enthusiasts alike. As we unkork this saga from 2008, let us toast to Domaine Dujac for affording us another chapter in fine wine's grand oeuvre. This wine's investment allure is intertwined with its compellingly erudite expression of terroir and time—poised to engross palates today and mature gracefully for years to come.

The 2008 Clos St. Denis emerges from the glass with layers of fruit. This is an especially round, generous wine for the vintage. The Clos St. Denis has plenty of underlying structure to support the fruit and also allow for significant aging. The finish lingers on the palate for what seems like an eternity. The qualities of the vineyard as seen through the lens of the year come through loud and clear in this profound Burgundy. Anticipated maturity: 2018-2033. This is a beautiful set of wines from Dujac. The harvest started on September 10 and ended on the 17th. Jeremy Seysses told me he wanted to pick on the early side in order to preserve freshness. In a similar vein, Seysses kept the fermentations short and gentle to avoid over-extracting. I also tasted a handful of 2008s, which are beautiful wines that are true to type and site. In 2008 the estate finished its conversion to fully organic farming originally started in 2001. Dujac fans have a lot to look forward to in these two vintages.
