Vintage Virtuosity: The 2014 Climatic Ballet

The 2014 season in Burgundy was a dramatic ballet of climatic twists; a cool start and unforeseen hailstorms paved the way for an exquisite Indian summer that ultimately defined the vintage. This meticulous dance with Mother Nature resulted in wines with purity, depth, and a structure that solicit a nod from both collectors and purists alike.

The Bonnes-Mares terroir can be challengingly capricious, yet the 2014 offering from Maison Joseph Drouhin breaks through with poetic finesse. There's a dialogue between fruit and earth here that yields an intriguing narrative upon tasting—the dark cherry undertones are intwined with earthy truffle accents that resonate with pinpoint precision on the palate.

With the regal prowess expected of Grand Cru lineage, this wine embodies exceptional composure on both nose and palate. The 2014 Bonnes Mares Grand Cru was cropped on September 19 and includes 15% whole cluster fruit, and unlike the Musigny, this had not been bottled. Deep in color, it has great volume and generosity on the nose with blackberry, boysenberry and wilted violet aromas. The fruit is more red than black, perhaps quite Vosne-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, clean and pure, quite refined with deftly integrated oak. Curiously, it comes across as linear on the finish. This is a strict Bonnes-Mares with good tension, a Bonnes-Mares that does not want to let its hair down at the moment. I'd like to see just a little more flamboyance once in bottle.
