2001 Musigny

By Maison Joseph Drouhin

2001 Musigny from Maison Joseph Drouhin, Burgundy, France

The early millennium was graced by an exceptional offering from Burgundy: the 2001 Musigny from Maison Joseph Drouhin. This exquisite red, hailing from one of the most ethereal terroirs in the Côte de Nuits, illustrates the delicate interplay between a challenging climate and the seasoned hands that have shaped its evolution.

Vintner Virtuosity Amidst Climatic Caprice

In a vintage noted for its capricious nature, marked by a cool summer followed by an unexpected September heatwave, the 2001 Musigny shines with testament to the vintners' prowess at Maison Joseph Drouhin. The warm days and cool nights just before harvest endowed this vintage with a particularly fascinating bouquet, marrying the complexities of perfect physiological ripeness with the acids required for longevity. Impressively enough, it is this climatic serendipity, seized so adeptly by Drouhin's team, that results in a wine whose finesse has only deepened through the decades.

A Symbiosis of Season and Soil

Vigilantly nurtured grapes have offered up a ruby-tinted elixir. There is an arresting vibrancy to this 2001 Musigny, where red cherries flirt with undercurrents of bramble fruit and a whispering leathery spice—an intricate performance set against the backdrop of Musigny's notoriously elegant tannins. Not to be overlooked is the mineral clin d'oeil—the twinkle of stone and earth—that waltzes seamlessly across one's palate; indeed a distinctive imprint of its esteemed appellation.

Eminently investable, this 2001 vintage encapsulates an enchanting narrative of climatic resilience. It whispers of Burgundian tradition while singing boldly of its unique year—a poised balance struck between ethereal grace and grounded complexity.

This review extols not merely a wine but a living chronicle, showcasing how the confluence of weather’s whim and vigneron skill can inscribe upon a bottle both history and prophecy. The 2001 Musigny from Maison Joseph Drouhin—more than just a drink—it’s a study in vinous virtuosity worthy of any astute investor’s portfolio.

Drouhin's 2001 Musigny Grand Cru is beginning to drink very well, opening in the glass to reveal an alluring bouquet of black cherry, raspberry, rose petal, violets, summer truffle and subtle espresso roast. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, succulent and generous, its chassis of fine tannins enrobed in an ample core of juicy fruit. Anyone sitting on bottles in the cellar should feel very content indeed.
