2002 Ermitage l'Ermite Blanc from Chapoutier, Rhone

Investors and fine wine connoisseurs alike have been charmed by the compelling allure of the 2002 Ermitage l'Ermite Blanc from Chapoutier, a veritable treasure of the Rhone Valley. This memorable vintage not only bears testimony to the highly-regarded Marsanne variety but also to the particularly favourable climatic conditions of its time.

Unique Vintage, Oenological Triumph

One must recognize that 2002 was indeed a challenging year for many winemakers. Yet, the arduous climatic conditions of high precipitation paired with cooler temperatures set the stage for what has turned out to be a substantial investment opportunity in an exceptionally unique wine.

The crucial balance between complex acidity and refreshing minerality on the palate was masterfully achieved due to the cooler weather, particularly in August. The slightly lower temperatures provided the necessary delay in ripening, resulting in an extended hang time for the grapes - allowing them to reach full maturity while retaining their crispness.

The Prodigy of Chapoutier's skill

The genius craftsmanship of Chapoutier is boldly evident in this incredible display of Marsanne’s distinctive terroir. As investors know, it is this synergy between winemaker and grape that allows for both salient returns and unprecedented gustatory experiences, especially when it comes to exceptional vintages such as the 2002 Ermitage l’Ermite Blanc.

This remarkable Rhone white seduces with nuanced whispers of honeyed melon and stone fruit, underscored by intriguing hints of fresh almond and fennel. The finish lingers extraordinarily, leaving behind a symphony of spice interweaving with faint zests of candied citrus.

Investment Value and the Lasting Appeal

The 2002 Ermitage l'Ermite Blanc convincingly demonstrates the prodigious investment appeal of singular vintages. Its gorgeous complexity, balanced by approachable elegance, cements it as not just a testament to the winemaking prowess of Chapoutier, but also to the enduring potential of the finest terroirs of Rhone, a feature every serious wine investor should appreciate.

Drawing close upon two decades of maturation, this wine encapsulates all the essential elements for continued development and appreciation - both metaphorical and monetary. Ultimately, the 2002 Ermitage l’Ermite Blanc from Chapoutier underscores that noteworthy vintages are indeed, a phenomenal opportunity for accruing value and creating captivating gustatory narratives.

Perhaps the most surprising thing is how spectacular the 2002 whites are from Michel Chapoutier. Because of space limitations, I am only listing the numerical score for this wine, which is evolved, but exceptional for such a challenging vintage. As I have said so many times over the last 15 years, the top Chapoutier wines are meant for very long term drinking, and are not designed for immediate gratification. Everything Chapoutier is doing, from his bio-dynamically farmed vineyard to tiny yields, extended fermentations, indigenous yeasts, and no fining or filtration, is done to produce the essence of a vineyard and a vintage. His track record since 1989 and 1990 admirably proves that these are indeed remarkable wines made by a young genius who refuses to compromise. Michel Chapoutier has been misunderstood by some of his peers, and there is a lot of jealousy when someone this young is so incredibly talented, but it is an irrefutable fact that these are wines of singular greatness as well as longevity.
